Updated Rug Buying Guide - Picking The Right Rug!

Are you buying a new rug?  Have you been pinning endlessly and searching every site known to man and still can’t make a decision.  I know the process can be very overwhelming – what size, colour, pattern and style do you buy?  Don’t worry because I’m here to help you choose the perfect rug that will bring your whole room together.

Area Rug Size

Buying a rug that is too small for the space is the most common mistake I see in homes.  I look at a rug as a focal point.  Have you ever been in a room and everything looks beautiful and something is off?  It’s usually the rug just being too small.  Now a rug that is too large for the space will look off too.  Think of your rug as a pair of jeans – it needs to fit comfortably.

Hey I gotcha, all you do is use painter’s tape and measure the right size of rug you need in your space!  Remember all the front legs of your furniture should be placed on the rug.  There should be roughly 12-18” of free space around your coffee table.  In your Dining Room keep in mind that when you shuffle your chair back to get out of your seat, your chair should still be on the rug.  When it comes to a bedroom just make sure that no matter what side of the bed youget out of your toes should hit the area rug.

Keep in mind depending on the space you put your rug, it will get a different amount of traffic.  To ensure your rug lasts for years to come keep it on a level surface,  keep it out of direct sunlight, rotate it so it gets an even amount of wear and if it’s in direct sunlight just keep in mind that those sunnies will fade your new beauty, so again rotate for this reason also.

Rug Materials

Hands down the material you choose will affect the budget and quality of the rug.  One thing I always make sure to ask myself is “Will this hold up to my real life on the day to day?”

My boys are pretty hard on the rugs.  Do you have kids or pets?  Choose a rug fiber that’s durable and easy to clean up all those mucky hands and spills.  Just think the longer the fibers, the more plush it will be.

DSCN1852.jpg

Again keep in mind what works for your family?  If you have a family member that has allergies, a morrocan beni Ourain may not be on the menu.  You will want the fiber makeup to be more organic like a jute or seagrass or at least a tighter weave like a Turkish kilim.  Does a family member use a wheel chair or have a cane?  A low pile rug would suit your needs best.

Rug Styles

This is probably one of the most intimidating factors when it comes to buying a rug.  The choices are endless!  The rug needs to reflect your personality and of course go with all your furnishings.

For this I don’t use any rules when it comes to choosing your rug style.  I have read that designers recommend to mimic the shape of the room or a piece of furniture.

DSCN1371.jpg

Rug Patterns

You never want your room to look like a ugly Christmas sweater!  Choosing a crazy colour or pattern can result in something just not good.  When choosing a rug pattern here’s a couple helpful strategies so that it complements your furniture and accessories.

Neutral walls?  Add some energy by adding some colour or a intricate pattern.   My personal favourite is Persians rugs or kilim for a timeless look.

DSCN1748.jpg

If you have more colour and energy on your walls , then tone down the choice of rug to something more neutral.  You don”t want to be refereeing the walls and rug fighting for attention.  In this house anyways, my boys are enough.  This is where you find the beauty in simplicity whether it’s a stripe or even a solid to help unify the space.

 Choosing a rug colour

Now the colour.  I think of it like choosing a wall colour. Dark walls and rugs make a room feel smaller.  Light coloured walls and rugs really open up a space.

Big recommendation!  If you have kids or pets a darker coloured rug is the way to go.  A spilled cup of juice or coffee will hide the messes.

Another method that will create a pulled together look is matching your rug to accent colours that already exist in your space.

Rug layering

Do you have a rug your absolutely in love with and can’t part with but it is way too small for your space?  This may sound contradictive but you can still use it!  The trick to this is by layering the right size rug underneath.  You can use a jute, sisal or even a stripe or black and white pattern. As long as the base is neutral.

So there you have it! Buying a rug should be much easier. What I do is make a point form list in my phone so I don’t get distracted as well. If you have any questions feel free to comment below and happy shopping! If you have any questions please comment below!!!!

It feels so good to be done our Bedroom Design.  I liked our bedroom before, just didn’t love it.  I went through a big bohemian phase and feel like my style is evolving to more of a Eclectic style with a hint of the California vibe.   I wanted to freshen up the space to have a bright, simple and calming feel to the space with some texture.  Let’s get into it.

This is what it looked like. The bedroom was pretty neutral as I painted it out “Simply White” by Benjamin Moore and added one bold wall in “Witching Hour” by Benjamin Moore.  I added some light drapes from Home Sense and the room has a dark grey carpet.  Don’t be fooled it’s totally okay to layer a area rug on the carpet.  Big goals is to put in a new wood floor.  In order to do that I would need to do the entire house and there is no budget for that.  So dark carpet it is!  The night tables were thrifted and are actually end tables, but they worked at the time and were the perfect height.

The placement of the bed just never felt right in the room and I really wanted to update that IKEA pendant that everyone was goo goo for!  We all go through our phases right!

I love this room guys.  Our new bed and nightstands really give the room a modern, simple look and the wood adds some warmth.  By Placing the bed on that wall it allowed me to frame the bed. First thing I did was gave this room a lick of white paint! Because the room is north facing the right white was key! Thanks to My Favourite Paint the owner Renee came out and helped me select the perfect shade called Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore. It really changed the entire feeling in the space!!! Don’t worry! I have a White Paint Guide Post coming soon!   I chose this beautiful bright white Linen Fabric by Ennis to help the space feel airy and the black hardware really gives it a polished look. The curtains were made by David’s Design Center.  I chose to go with a pleat and so glad I did.

DSCN2098.jpg

When selecting and measuring for my two little windows I had to really consider the light in this space.  Again the room is dark but I am also a light sleeper.  When I wake I aint going back down easy and so I wanted the space to be bright during the day but keep light out so I’m not woken up at the break of dawn.  I already have Hunter Douglas Cellular shades to make it dark when needed so the curtains were used to really soften and frame those little windows.  Depending on where your windows face you may or may not have these issues but,  wrapping it up this is all things to cinsider.  The fabric and drapes were gifted Ennis Fabrics and David’s Design Center, otherwise It would be Homesense curtains again.

Moving along the bed is from Rove Concepts.  It works perfectly in the space and the wood adds some organic modern design to the space.  Goes so perfectly with the fresh white walls and it has a nice contrast with the hints of blue.

The rug is from Kech Mara Designs.  I wanted to add a neutral colour so there’s a nice contrast between the bed and the carpet again with nice a nice contrast and texture in the design.

The bedding is all from Cultiver Goods which is THE SOFTEST EVER!!!! linked below.  This bedding is all organic linen made from European flax and feels soft to the touch. I chose to get separate fitted sheet and a different bed sheet for an effortless look.  The Mira Throw is a heavy weight Linen and adds a layer of texture to the bed.

Close up one side shot of the bed.

The nightstand and lamps are two peas in a pod.  The lamp is a beautiful organice piece of teak paired with the modern walnut nightstand works and I just love it. The nightstands instantly make the space feel fresh and now. These also have two soft closing drawers which I love and loads of space.

Of course I tossed my bible “The Surf Shack” by Nina Freudenberger, my Saje for a calming smell, my newest ceramic splurge by Element Clay Studio for all those wee bits and a vintage ceramic piece with pretty dried daisies from West Elm.

Let’s go to the other side of this room.

DSCN2084.jpg

Are you not in love!!!  Look at the super model of a bench.  This was gifted from Wu and MchughI I styled it here at the foot of our bed bur for everyday yes we are tv in the room type of people.  The antique bench adds so much texture and character to the room.  Playing the other side of the spectrum from the modern Scandinavian furniture they just work and it’s pretty darn gorgeous.

Crave Interiors-ct4Pj569175919.jpg

I borrowed one my CB2 chairs down stairs to fill the space in the corner.

I’m pretty happy with this room.  I do have a couple things I would like to update over time. Some wall hooks or A beautiful Antique wood wall rack. A chair for the corner so I’m not borrowing chairs from the living room and a slightly larger light.  I love the semi flush mount by Mitzi but I think a small chandelier would look better.  First have to scrape that popcorn ceiling. ( not looking forward to that job.)  This room is so easy to keep up and not feeling cluttered.  In a master bedroom I like to keep the space simple and peaceful.  So that’s a wrap folks!!! If you have any sources for an Antique Wall Rack pop a comment below! Would love to know how you like the room too and if you would change anything. Till Next time!!

Crave Interiors X Loloi - How To Find The Perfect Rug

Today I’m sharing Loloi Rugs. Based out of Dallas Texas, Loloi Rugs has some of the most beautiful rugs out there! Teaming up with some of the best Designers in the business such as Ellen DeGeneres, Joanna Gaines and Justina Blakeney I was confident I would find exactly what I was looking for. Not only that they are a designer’s dream and provide an array of free resources and reliable, practically on-demand shipping options. When Loloi rugs reached out I was very excited to revisit this very important design decision for the living room and also thought it would be a great opportunity to talk about how to find the perfect rug.

I had to snap up this beauty from the Loren Collection Brick/Blue

I had to snap up this beauty from the Loren Collection Brick/Blue

The Loren is a power-loomed rug made of 100% polyester in Turkey. It’s a printed design that offers the same look as a vintage hand-knotted rug but at a much more affordable price point.

Antique rug, shopping, interiors, my domaine,

A rug is really the anchor piece for the room and can really make or break the whole design. This is not a search you want to rush! I chose this rug because I love the colours. The space has very neutral pieces, this rug really adds a splash of colour to the room. I felt this rug was also versatile and so it is a piece that can be styled in multiple ways and go in any room of my home adding value. Because it’s the winter I felt like the room was looking dark and needed a winter pick me up!

interior designer, pinterest, google, area rug, living room decor,

Consider the existing light, the paint colors of your walls, and the shade of your furniture. The rug I chose for the living room has a very timeless feel to it. It's stimulating but not too bright and will easily translate through each season. I was also surprised how a red rug complemented the wood coffee table.

Moving on to the dining room I had to try it in here and as you can see it works so well! Again I’m loving the colours that are bright and almost feel neutral too. A rug can really transform a space and are a great investment seriously! I never go smaller then a 6’ x9’ and Ideally gor for an 8’ x 10’ this way the rug will also fit most spaces as well. It’s better to have a rug that is too big, then too small. I see this mistake time and time again.

Now that you see how a well chosen rug can really add value and change a room, it is well worth the splurge. Make sure to checkout Loloi Rugs. They have so many gorgeous rugs waiting for there forever home.
